Chile has a wide maritime tradition which extends towards the Pacific Ocean, the island territories, and the Antarctic Continent largely depending on the sea due to its geographical condition as a mainly maritime state with a tri-continental dimension. All this is reflected on the use of maritime ways to transport more than the 94% of Chile’s foreign trade.

The aforementioned is completed with actions developed in order to increase the capacities to protect human life at sea, fight marine contamination and the  Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) at international level in order to mitigate the effects of climatic change in the seas and oceans; this is done through the designation of Marine Protected Areas, the increase of safety and security of these areas, and the conservation and sustainable usage of its resources.

Chile applies to the IMO Council in category "C" for the period 2024 - 2025, with the commitment to continue actively contributing with its permanent work in pursuit of the safety of human life at sea, the preservation of the oceans, their resources and sustainability.

This candidacy is a true reflection of the responsibility and commitment at the highest level to continue contributing value to the international maritime community, through regional technical cooperation, the integration of women in all areas of the maritime field and with the development and implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals and the IMO Strategic Plan.
